Winter witnesses some dazzling star patterns in our northern night skies, the constellations of Taurus, Gemini, Auriga & Leo amongst them. Somewhat surprisingly the Ancient Greeks seemed to miss a trick with that most prominent of celestial asterisms, the giant Orion, but to the Ancient Egyptians this area of the sky was the bedrock of a civilisation that lasted for over 3,000 years.
