Mars & Venus
Earth’s orbit lies between those of Venus and Mars, the bridge between the “inferior” and “superior” planets. We look at the cycles of these most personal and individual of celestial bodies in their orbits around the Sun and how the natures of their differing rhythms and varying visibilities as viewed from planet Earth has shaped the characteristics we attribute to them and what can then be further drawn out from a chart to enliven and enrich our astrological interpretations.
Mars is the first of the superior planets that lie outside Earth’s orbit, the last outpost of our personal world, our border guard, and our first line of defence against any potential external assault. With the seemingly endless search for the vital signs of past and present life, precious water, either on the surface of or contained within his cracked torso, we examine whether this aged and aching planet is still up to the task at hand.
Every two years Mars appears brightly in our night skies in his orbital cycle and stations, reminding us of his continued vitality, but with Pluto’s increasingly tenacious hold on Scorpio and the Sun’s vibrant exaltation in Aries what role should we nowadays assign to him?
Whilst Venus might beguile us with the shining promise of love, fulfilment and all things beautiful, what we perhaps too often engage in is the fine art of self-seduction. We reflect on the siren call of our Venus and what carnage we may then wreak upon our own worlds with the life on our Mars.
